John Baldwin began producing grindstones here in 1842, and by 1850-1870 Berea Sandstone quarried in and around Amherst was recognized as a standard building stone nationally, per the Amherst Historical Society's own account. The Ohio Bicentennial Commission formally recognized Amherst as the "Sandstone Center of the World" in 2003, a name local businessman O.H. Baker had used since 1910.
The Cleveland Stone Company, formed in 1886 by consolidating Amherst-area quarry operations, became one of the largest sandstone producers in the country; the No. 6 quarry alone was reputed to be among the largest single sandstone quarries anywhere.
The city's income tax is 1.5 percent, in effect since 1991, with a 1 percent credit for tax already paid to another city, per the city's own income tax page.
