Berea's identity is built on sandstone. John Baldwin founded the Baldwin Quarry Company here in 1842, and at peak production Berea's quarries shipped 400 tons a day across the U.S., Canada, Europe and Australia. The last quarry closed in 1946, by which time the sandstone was largely used up.
The city's income tax is 2.0 percent, with credit up to 1.5 percent for tax paid to another city, collected through RITA.
Baldwin Wallace University traces to Baldwin Institute, founded in 1845 and merged with German Wallace College in 1913; the school has hosted the oldest collegiate Bach Festival in the United States since 1933.
A Cleveland Browns training complex opened in Berea in 1991 and was renovated in 1999.
