Grafton was settled in 1817 by Jonathan Rawson of Massachusetts. The railroad named its stop Grafton Station, the post office accepted the name in 1852, and it became official when the village incorporated on January 1, 1877, per the village's own heritage page.
Sandstone quarrying started here in 1849 and grist mills followed in 1858. The Elm Street school building, in use from 1936 to 1955, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
