A historical marker in Stanhope Park, placed jointly by the Seville Historical Society and the Ohio Historical Society, commemorates Martin Van Buren Bates and Anna Swan Bates, a 19th-century couple — he stood 7 feet 8 inches, she 7 feet 11 inches — who settled in Seville in 1873 and were known internationally in their lifetime.
